- Jota’s compatriots represented the club
- Amorim, Fernandes and Dalot pay respects
- Tributes to Portuguese star continue
United were represented by Bruno Fernandes, Diogo Dalot and manager Ruben Amorim; all compatriots of the late Diogo Jota, who passed away at the age of 28 on July 3. Fernandes and Dalot, both international teammates of Jota’s, laid a wreath among the thousands of floral tributes which have been left outside Liverpool‘s stadium. Both players’ return to pre-season training had been delayed in light of the tragedy.
The card attached to the bouquet of red and white roses read a simple but heartfelt message: “Rest in peace Diogo and Andre, with deepest condolences from everyone at Manchester United.”

This tribute is the latest example of the outpouring of grief across the football world. Allegiances have been put to one side, as the game has united to pay their respects to two lives cut tragically short. Diehard Manchester City fans, the Gallagher brothers displayed Diogo Jota’s shirt during Oasis’ first gig in 15 years, while stars including Kylian Mbappe and Ousmane Dembele have honoured the 28-year-old with celebrations at the Club World Cup.
Both Liverpool and Manchester United are preparing for the coming season. Liverpool played their first game since the tragedy at Deepdale this past Sunday, beating Preston 3-1. United face off against Leeds in Stockholm on Sunday 19 July.
