- Gyokeres completes Arsenal move
- Swede set to wear iconic No.14 shirt at the Emirates
- Strikers explains why he chose to sign for the Gunners
Arsenal on Saturday officially announced they have completed the transfer of Gyokeres from Sporting CP, with the striker signing a long-term contract with the Premier League giants. Gyokeres spoke for the first time after signing his contract at his new club and revealed what led him to choose the Gunners.
Gyokeres spent two seasons in Lisbon, scoring an incredible 97 goals in just 102 games. He completed his move to Arsenal on the back of intense drama and war of words with Sporting CP president Frederico Varandas. Arsenal have paid £64 million (€74m/$86m) including bonuses to secure the Swedish international’s services, who will wear the iconic No.14 at the Emirates previously worn by legends such as Thierry Henry.
Addressing the media after he was announced as a new Arsenal player, Gyokeres said: “I just felt that it was the right club for me. When I was playing against Arsenal last season, I could really feel it was a very strong team and very difficult to play against. That made me choose Arsenal, and of course, all the history the club has and the massive fanbase.”
Furthermore, he also mentioned the support he received from Arsenal fans before even completing his move. He said: “It’s been amazing to see all the support that they have already given me before I even arrived. That’s what it’s all about. It’s going to be very nice to see them in the stadiums as well. To be a part of this club and to score in this kit and with this badge in front of all the supporters, I can’t wait. It will be an amazing feeling.”
Gyokeres is no stranger to English football, having made eight appearances for Brighton, albeit none of them in the Premier League. He also spent three seasons between 2020 to 2023 in the Championship, scoring 41 goals.
The 27-year-old is looking to leave a mark at the highest level in the country, adding: “I started here [in England], it feels like a long time ago. I think I’ve improved a lot since then. Now I want to prove myself for real and perform together with the team.
“When I played at Sporting, I scored a few goals in the Champions League so I feel that I can be on that level as well. Now to come here to a club on Arsenal’s level, I think it’s going to help me perform even better with all the amazing players in this team.
“I’m really excited to get going. I always want to score.”
The former Coventry City star will immediately fly to Asia to join his new team-mates for the pre-season tour. He is expected to make his unofficial debut in Arsenal colours on July 31, when Mikel Arteta’s side take on rivals Tottenham Hotspur.
