Maddison came off the bench in Spurs’ 1-1 draw with Newcastle in Seoul but was stretchered off in the 83rd minute following an innocuous clash with Anthony Elanga. The England international immediately signalled he was in distress before collapsing to the ground and leaving the field in clear pain.
Tottenham boss Frank confirmed the injury was to the same knee Maddison damaged earlier this year. The Danish manager admitted it looked ‘bad’ and described the situation as ‘both beautiful and brutal’ on a night that also saw Son Heung-min receive an emotional farewell. Maddison had only recently returned to full fitness after months on the sidelines. He was later seen exiting the stadium on crutches with his hood pulled low.
Maddison has been a key player for Tottenham since his 2023 move to north London from Leicester City. However, with injuries constantly playing a part in his career, the England international has only managed 75 appearances with the Lilywhites, with 16 goals and 21 assists to his name.
The 28-year-old will undergo scans to determine the full extent of the injury. Spurs are likely to issue an official update on Maddison’s injury before the weekend. His availability for the start of the الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز season is now in serious doubt.
