- The all-time great is reluctant to make bold predictions
- Has taken in final competitive outing on Argentine soil
- Urged to line up alongside CR7 at another tournament
After helping الأرجنتين to global glory at Qatar 2022, questions continue to be asked of whether eight-time Ballon d’Or winner Messi will form part of that title defence when FIFA’s flagship event heads to the متحد الدول، كندا و المكسيك.
The man himself continues to cast doubt over his involvement, with the انتر Miami superstar saying after representing his country in what is expected to be a last competitive outing on home soil: “I said it at the time. I don’t think I’ll play in another كأس العالم. Due to my age, it’s logical that I won’t make it, but we’re there and I’m excited. I’m taking it day by day, feeling the sensations. And what’s clear is that today was the last game here.”
Many are hoping that Messi is merely keeping cards close to his chest, with the 38-year-old reluctant to make bold predictions that he cannot guarantee delivering on. The expectation is that he will grace next summer’s World Cup finals alongside eternal rival CR7.
Cope journalist Tomas Guasch hopes that will be the case, telling Tiempo de Juego: “We were all very calm until Leo Messi appeared, questioning his presence at next year’s World Cup.
“He says it’s normal for him not to be there. But if that World Cup had any appeal, it was the final dance between Messi and Cristiano رونالدو, in what would be one of the most tremendous and grandiose epics in the history of football and world sport. But Leo casts doubt on that.
“I hope he plays in the World Cup even if he’s embalmed. Because there are 48 teams playing, hundreds of players, and only Messi is missing? I think it would be a joke for football, and someone should intervene. You can’t leave us alone.”
Argentina coach Lionel Scaloni has always maintained that he will leave big calls on future plans in the hands of his iconic captain. International retirement appears to be close for Messi, as a new contract is mooted in MLS, but no date has been set in stone as yet.
