Sergio Ramos, the legendary former ريال مدريد defender and current Monterrey captain, is expected to lead Liga MX as captain in Wednesday night’s All-Star showdown against MLS at Q2 Stadium in Austin. Liga MX Commissioner Mikel Arriola confirmed Ramos’ role on X Tuesday night. While his participation was initially in doubt, the Spanish center-back has reportedly traveled to Austin and will look to guide André Jardine’s squad to victory. With Ramos joining the squad, Monterrey will now have two representatives on the Liga MX All-Star roster, as fellow Spaniard Sergio Canales is also included.
Liga MX will look to extend its strong run against the MLS All-Stars, having claimed a 4-1 victory in the 2024 edition at Lower.com Field in Columbus. However, in Tuesday’s Skills Challenge, the MLS side came out on top over Liga MX.
Though his participation was initially uncertain, Liga MX president Mikel Arriola confirmed both Ramos’ presence and his leadership role for the match: “The captain of the Liga MX team in tomorrow’s All-Star Game against MLS in Austin will be the historic Sergio Ramos,” he announced.
The Liga MX roster has taken a hit with several last-minute absences. América’s Henry Martín and Sebastián Cáceres were ruled out due to injury, while Cruz Azul will be without Ignacio Rivero, Erik Lira, and Carlos Rotondi.
