- Onana ruled out of action with hamstring injury
- Will miss the entire pre-season tour
- Amorim might sign a goalkeeper after all
Red Devils stars reported back for pre-season training at Carrington earlier this week. During a training session, Onana injured his hamstring and has now been ruled out of action for a long period, according to The Telegraph. With Onana missing the entire pre-season tour, Ruben Amorim might consider signing a new goalkeeper this summer, after all.
Despite the massive injury blow, United remain hopeful that the Cameroon custodian will be able to regain full fitness before the start of the season and feature in Amorim’s starting line-up against the Gunners in their curtain-raiser. In case Onana doesn’t make it before the season opener, his deputy Altay Bayindir will fill in. The other options that Amorim has at his disposal are veteran Tom Heaton, who recently signed a contract extension, and 21-year-old Czech goalkeeper Radek Vitek.
A move for World Cup-winning Argentine goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez has been touted, who could exit Aston Villa this summer. The English giants have been linked to sign the ex-Arsenal custodian, who many consider to be a massive upgrade on Onana. The Cameroon international has faced criticism for his poor performances throughout the disastrous 2024-25 campaign as the club finished 15th in the الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز.
United will travel to the U.S. for the second part of their pre-season training later this month. They will play their first friendly match against Leeds United on July 19 in Stockholm.
