- ريكسهام progress to second round
- Palmer scored two late headers
- Await second-round draw on Wednesday
Hull could have taken the lead ten minutes into the game as Ryan Giles’ free-kick was met by Oli McBurnie, but the Scotland international could only flick a header just wide of the far post.
It was the striker again who came closest next by forcing a big save from Wrexham goalkeeper Arthur Okonkwo and the shot-stopper’s efforts proved pivotal as the hosts took a barely deserved lead just after the half-hour mark. An effort from Elliot Lee took a whopping deflection off John Egan and looped over Dillon Phillips into the back of the net.
The advantage lasted little more than five minutes, however. McBurnie had already sent a few warning shots before he finally got on the scoresheet by turning in Cody Drameh’s low cross.
Half time came and went before Ryan Hardie nodded wide from Ryan Longman’s cross, while Hull remained threatening as Kasey Palmer stung Okonkwo fingers with a fierce but central strike.
The visiting Tigers made good on their promising attacks by taking the lead in the 70th minute. Joe Gelhardt raced away down the right and put the ball on a plate for substitute Joel Ndala to tap in from close range.
Things only got worse for Wrexham as they left themselves exposed at the back by chasing an equaliser. Having lost their بطولة opener to Southampton at the weekend despite taking the lead, the Red Dragons’ hopes of progression in the Carabao Cup seemed to be completely extinguished as Palmer set up Matt Crooks for another easy finish right on the goal-line.
However, substitute Ollie Palmer clearly had other ideas. The EFL veteran entered the fray as a 69th-minute replacement but came alive in stoppage time, bagging a headed brace inside two minutes to bring the score back to 3-3 and set up a penalty shootout.
Ndala went from hero to villain as he missed his spot-kick, allowing Jack Marriott to convert Wrexham’s fifth successful penalty and book their spot in the second round.
Ollie Palmer has given Wrexham fans plenty of memories over the years but few will compare to his dramatic double on Tuesday night. It looks like the 33-year-old’s future lies away from the Racecourse Ground and if this was his final act as a Red Dragons player, it was certainly a timely one.
Hull youngster Joel Ndala did next to nothing wrong in his substitute cameo, putting them into the lead shortly after his arrival. However, the مانشستر سيتي loanee’s missed spot-kick proved the difference as all other nine efforts hit the back of the net.
Wrexham will await the draw for the second round of the Carabao Cup which will take place on Wednesday after برمنغهام‘s clash with Sheffield متحد. Their next fixture is a home clash with West Brom on Sunday while Hull take on Oxford United on Saturday.
