- Millwall defeats Norwich 2-1
- Sargent scores first goal of campaign
- USMNT striker been linked with transfer away
U.S. international Josh Sargent scored the lone goal for Norwich City on Saturday in a narrow 2-1 defeat to Millwall as the Canaries fell on opening day.
Sargent earned the start and donned the captain’s armband in the loss, but his goal was a fantastic effort nonetheless. Ten minutes into the second half, operating as a single striker, he pressed Millwall goalkeeper Vladan Kovacevic and leapt in front of a clearance attempt, getting a boot on the ball to deflect it into the net. His high press and work rate in the moment saw him capitalize on the goalkeeper’s error.
A late strike from Macaulay Langstaff with five minutes to spare earned Millwall all three points, though, as Sargent’s strike wasn’t enough at the full-time whistle.
Sargent has been the talk of the summer with Norwich, linked with a transfer away. In July, he reportedly turned down a move to الدوري الألماني جانب فولفسبورغ after the two clubs had agreed to a transfer fee north of $20 million.
With Sargent still aiming to contend for a كأس العالم spot on the 2026 USMNT roster, there is still speculation that Sargent will aim to depart the English side this summer, but where to remains to be seen. Burnley were previously linked, but they’ve instead signed former تشيلسي man Armando Broja up top.
Sargent was not included in the USMNT’s Gold Cup squad this past summer due to a “football decision,” per manager Mauricio Pochettino.
Norwich take on Watford on Tuesday in the EFL Cup before returning to بطولة action next weekend against Portsmouth.
