- Video showcases focus on tactical preparation
- USMNT lost 2-0 to كوريا الجنوبية in their first international game since Gold Cup final
- Emphasis placed on building team chemistry
Mauricio Pochettino offered a rare glimpse into his coaching methods as the USMNT prepared for their upcoming match against اليابان. In behind-the-scenes footage released this week, Pochettino was shown leading detailed tactical sessions and team-building exercises in the wake of a 2-0 loss to South Korea. He also emphasized the importance of building chemistry and keeping the squad focused on the bigger picture.
“Despite the result, I think the atmosphere is so well, that is in the way that we want to work,” Pochettino said in the video by U.S. Soccer. “That is in the way that we want the players to feel when they arrive in the training camps on the وطني teams. And I think after March that was very disappointing for everyone. I think when we decide to change a little bit, the way we approach, I think the commitment of the player, the attitude is great.
“Now we need to improve in our performance and in our results. We are going to give the possibility to play some players that didn’t play at the moment so far with us. And I think it’s important because for different circumstances we are bringing different players. And I think its important that it’s a system that is very open.”
Pochettino stressed its important that he has a strong view of the national team pool before next summer’s كأس العالم.
“The way that we want to work is to know really well the players,” he explained. “To have them show up and have the chances on the end when we arrive to the World Cup, to have the chance to be a part of the roster.”
Pochettino’s approach has drawn criticism following another defeat against a top 30 opponent, this time South Korea over the weekend. Still, the Argentine hit back at critics, stressing his recent decisions are all based on building toward the 2026 World Cup.
“We are here because something needed to change,” Pochettino said. “That is why, less than one year ago, we came in to be in charge of the national team here. We are different and we have different words. But we are here because we want to share with you, and we want to learn from you. We don’t want to teach anyone.
“We have our plan, and that is a process. Of course, I want to win all of the games. But if we cannot win, we need to be positive in knowing that we are doing things that are very important to arrive at the World Cup in the best condition.”
The USMNT face Japan at Lower.com Field on Sept. 9, with Pochettino expected to implement several lineup changes to evaluate additional players under match conditions.
