- Matic terminates contract with ليون
- Sassuolo is interested in signing midfielder
- Positive meeting as discussions progress
Matic and Lyon agreed to terminate the Serbian’s contract last week. The former Manchester متحد midfielder is now a free agent and is seeking a move to إيطاليا. The Serbian and his agent met with Sassuolo coach Fabio Grosso and CEO Giovanni Carnevali and had a round of positive talks as well, according to سكاي سبورت.
The Serbian has played for روما, رين and, most recently, Lyon since leaving the الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز in 2022. The 37-year-old played 39 games for Lyon as an integral part of the team last season, but his contract was not renewed amid the club’s financial struggles. Matic was also motivated to leave due to his reduced playing time in European competition and could be on his way back to Italy, with Sassuolo negotiations underway.
During الدوري الفرنسي 1‘s annual anti-homophobia campaign, Matic drew criticism at Lyon after covering the rainbow badge with white tape during a match against Angers. His action prompted backlash from the media, LGBTQ advocates, and officials. Alongside ex-Le Havre player Ahmed Hassan, he received a two-match suspension and must complete an anti-discrimination program within six months.
Many other clubs have also shown interest in the ex-Lyon player, but there is no agreement on the financial side of the deal ahead of this weekend’s الدوري الإيطالي opening round.
