- LAFC reportedly target Son
- Winger has starred for Tottenham for a decade
- Spurs set to tour Asia
Los Angeles FC have set their sights on Heung-min Son, as the club is reportedly pushing to sign the Tottenham winger during the summer transfer window.
According to the Athletic, talks continue between LAFC and the South Korean star as the club looks to convince him to depart London to join them for the second half of the MLS season and beyond. The club could use some star power up front following the departure of Olivier Giroud, which left LAFC with two open Designated Player spots.
Recent reports out of England indicated that Son may not be in the plans for the new Tottenham boss, Thomas Frank. However, per Football-Asian, Son would prefer to see out his deal with Tottenham before heading to America following next summer’s World Cup.
The signing of Son would be a major on-field addition for LAFC, who currently sit fifth in the Western Conference. The club also has multiple games in hand due to their run in the Club World Cup, which ended after three group stage games.
Son would instantly become one of MLS’ top attackers, having scored 173 goals over his decade-long stay with Tottenham. The signing of the winger could also have huge commercial benefits.
One of the game’s most popular players in general, Son has a loyal following of South Korean fans – and Los Angeles has the largest Korean population of any city in the United States.
If Son were to come to Los Angeles, he would be reunited with a familiar face. LAFC’s current goalkeeper is former Tottenham star Hugo Lloris, who was the winger’s longtime teammate in London.
Tottenham are preparing for a preseason tour of Asia, which includes matches against Arsenal in Hong Kong on July 31 and Newcastle in Seoul on Aug. 3.
Son is widely expected to stay through that tour, with The Telegraph reporting that Spurs could lose as much as 75 percent of their playing fee if Son is not part of the team that faces Newcastle in South Korea.
The MLS summer transfer window is open through Aug. 21.
