Liverpool won't reignite their interest in Marc Guehi in the January transfer window as they look to sign the England defender for free next summer once his Crystal Palace contract expires. The Reds were very close to landing Guehi in the summer transfer window, until Palace chairman Steve Parish pulled the plug on the deal at the 11th hour on deadline day.

After initially agreeing to sell Guehi for a £35 million ($47m) transfer fee to Liverpool, Parish decided to walk away from the deal at the last moment on deadline day, reportedly after coming under pressure from manager Oliver Glasner. Palace did not have an adequate replacement for the centre-back and, as a result, they decided to retain Guehi’s services.

Guehi was reportedly upset over the failed transfer, as he had earlier informed the Eagles that he wanted to join Liverpool. The international, who is in the final year of his contract, will not sign an extension and will walk out of the club as a free agent next summer. According to صحيفة التايمز the Reds will not chase Guehi in January as they are not willing to shell out on a player who would be available for free only six months later.

While they failed to land Guehi, the champions did bolster their defence by signing 18-year-old Giovanni Leoni from Parma for €35 million (£30m/$40m). Newcastle had also been interested in the young Italian.

Arne Slot’s side, who are on a three-match winning streak, will be back in action in the Premier League on September 14 as they take on بعيدا عن المنزل.
