According to Mundo Deportivo, via Sport Witness, Madrid manager Xabi Alonso is said to have asked for a new midfielder this summer, with Los Blancos willing to pay €100 million (£86.6m) for the 29-year-old.

The report adds that Madrid understands that ‘none of them (midfielders) are worth (€100m) it’ except Rodri, and the Spanish giants ‘really like’ the international. Rodri initially said he “doesn’t think of other teams” when he is playing for a club, before later stating in 2024 that if Madrid call you, “you have to pay attention”. But Madrid reportedly admit signing him will be difficult.

Rodri, who angered much of Madrid’s support when he beat to the 2024 Ballon d’Or and revelled in edging out the winger, still has two years left on his City contract. So next year, more teams may move for the experienced midfielder.

Rodri, who is trying to regain his top form after a lengthy knee injury, will soon return to City as they prepare for the 2025/26 season. The Spaniard is likely to be key for Pep Guardiola’s men next term.
