Man Utd women's player ratings vs PSV: Hat-trick hero Elisabeth Terland keeps Champions League dreams on track as Lionesses star Ella Toone shines on Red Devils return

The England midfielder had to fill in on the wing on Wednesday, but she was as creative as ever to help Marc Skinner's side to a big win

مانشستر eased through their first Women’s qualifier on Wednesday with an impressive performance and 4-0 win over . The Red Devils were without five first-team stars for their season opener, including international Grace Clinton and marquee summer signing Fridolina Rolfo, but they still possessed more than enough quality to send them through to the next round, with Elisabeth Terland netting a hat-trick while Celin Bizet also got on the scoresheet.

United were on the front foot from the get-go and it took them just seven minutes to break the deadlock, when Lisa Naalsund pressed high to force an error from the PSV defence before setting up Terland, whose finish was ruthless. Further chances would come for Terland, Ella Toone and Julia Zigiotti Olme, who was denied a goal on her debut by the woodwork, before Bizet doubled the lead just past the half-hour mark, latching onto the rebound of Toone’s well-saved effort and thumping it into the back of the net.

There were several talented players in this PSV side for the Red Devils to be wary of, namely all-time top-scorer Renate Jansen and starlet Riola Xhemaili, who caught the eye at Euro 2025. However, United put the Dutch outfit under so much pressure that they could never get into their stride and pose any real threat, with two excellent through-balls from a terrific Toone helping Terland to complete her hat-trick, and a perfect afternoon for the team, in the second half.

Marc Skinner’s side will now likely face Hammarby on Saturday, with a place in the third and final round of Champions League qualifying up for grabs. The Swedish side played in the competition’s group stage last season and are currently top of the Damallsvenskan, with the fact that they are in-season also making them a dangerous proposition. If United play like this again, though, they can be confident of making it through to the next stage.

Phallon Tullis-Joyce (7/10):

Made a terrific save to keep her clean sheet intact in the latter stages, a stop made all the more impressive by how little she had to do otherwise. Commanded her box well when crosses were delivered.

Jayde Riviere (7/10):

Offered a great outlet down the right, spending most of her time in the opposition’s half. Came up with a potentially vital intervention in her own box at 2-0.

Maya Le Tissier (6/10):

Didn’t have much to do but stood up tall and did her job well when called upon.

Dominique Janssen (6/10):

Similarly, she wasn’t tested too much in the United backline, though didn’t do much wrong either.

Anna Sandberg (7/10):

Like Riviere, got forward plenty to offer support and was particularly effective down a lively left-hand side. Provided the cross which led to United’s second.

Julia Zigiotti Olme (8/10):

An excellent debut in which she moved the ball brilliantly and did her defensive duties efficiently when needed.

Hinata Miyazawa (8/10):

A classy performance in midfield. Had a little more freedom going forward with Zigiotti alongside her and made the most of it with some runs on and off the ball.

Lisa Naalsund (8/10):

Pushed high to essentially operate as a second striker, especially out of possession, and it was from that position that she put pressure on the PSV defence to create the opening goal. A fantastic display in which she caused the opposition so many problems.

Ella Toone (8/10):

Remained a threat despite playing in an unnatural position. Had a few looks at goal and was unlucky not to get on the scoresheet, with one of her well-saved efforts leading to United’s second, but did get two assists thanks to some excellent passing.

Elisabeth Terland (9/10):

Pressed well, worked hard and showed her clinical touch with three brilliantly taken goals. Her hold-up play and ability to create for others was great, too.

Celin Bizet (7/10):

Combined well with Sandberg to make the left United’s most dangerous side in the first half. Showed good awareness to get United’s second.

Melvine Malard (6/10):

Brought good energy to the left for the final stages of the game, ensuring there was no respite for the PSV defence.

Millie Turner (6/10):

Continued to build up her game time after injury with a good 25-minute run out here.

Keira Barry (N/A):

The 20-year-old has caught the eye in pre-season and got her reward for those efforts here with a little cameo.

Marc Skinner (8/10):

Set his team up brilliantly, especially given the constraints placed upon him by absences. Toone filled in effectively on the right and Naalsund’s advanced position was so often responsible for United’s best moments. The high press was so effective and his team looked sharp.
