- Switzerland eliminated by Spain
- Lehmann thanks supporters
- Made two Euro 2025 appearances
Euro 2025 hosts Switzerland were eliminated from the tournament on Friday night at the quarter-final stage. They valiantly kept out Spain for over an hour before two quick strikes from Athenea del Castillo and Claudia Pina sealed victory for the current world champions.
Switzerland don’t have a particularly impressive record at major tournaments, having been eliminated in the group stage during their only two previous Euros appearances. They’ve also only ever played at two Women’s World Cup but took on their role as hosts with great vigour, squeezing into the knockout stages with four points after an opening night defeat to Norway.
On her Instagram account, Lehmann wrote: “Thank you Switzerland. A memory we will never forget.”
Lehmann had a limited tournament, only making brief substitute appearances against Finland and Spain despite being one of the most recognisable faces in Swiss football. However, she played a leading role in psyching up the dressing room, telling the squad to be “strong like rocks” before the competition kicked off.
Lehmann squeezed into the Switzerland squad this summer and will hope to further cement her place in Pia Sundhage’s roster moving forward with some good performances for club side Juventus.
