According to Sky Sport Newcastle submitted a written €80 million (£67m/$91m) offer for Ekitike on Tuesday morning. While that figure would break their transfer record, Frankfurt turned it down. The club were not satisfied with the payment structure and are holding out for a higher fee.

Eintracht only signed Ekitike permanently from six months ago for €16.5m (£14m/$19m). His 22 goals and 12 assists in 48 games last season have made him a top target in Europe. Newcastle’s failed bid shows their intent, but Frankfurt believe they can attract more lucrative offers, possibly from rival suitors.

If the deal had gone through, the French striker would have become the Magpies’ most expensive signing ever, beating the €70m (£59m/$80m) they paid for Alexander Isak in 2022.

Frankfurt are continuing talks with interested clubs and won’t sell unless their financial demands and terms are fully met. Newcastle could return with an improved offer, but they face serious competition from other European sides already circling.
