The 28-year-old forward passed away alongside his brother Andre Silva on July 3. Jota was involved in a car accident when travelling through northern to a ferry port that would have seen him return to for pre-season training.n

Messages of condolence flooded in after news of Jota’s death broke, with several players and coaches that he worked alongside attending an emotional funeral in his home town of Gondomar.

have announced that they will be retiring their No.20 jersey, with the champions saying: “After consultation with his wife, Rute, and family, the club can announce the squad number will be retired in honour and memory of Diogo across all levels, including LFC Women and Academy.”

The Reds have also continued to include Jota on the squad list that on the club’s official website. After a run down of the goalkeepers, defenders, midfielders and forwards, a special “forever” spot is reserved for Jota.

Several players, across a variety of spots, have paid homage to Jota with on-field celebrations. Liverpool’s first game since receiving heartbreaking news saw them face North End in a pre-season friendly – with more tributes being paid there.
