- PSG looking for reinforcements after defeat to Chelsea
- Want to sign as many as seven players
- French side keeping tabs on Leao and Osimhen
PSG’s exceptional season came to a painful end. Crowned Champions League winners for the first time in their history, PSG suffered a crushing 3-0 defeat against Chelsea in the Club World Cup final on Sunday. It was a brutal setback, but also a wake-up call. The time has come for PSG officials to take a serious look at the summer transfer window. To date, no new signings have been made. But that could change very quickly, with no fewer than seven reinforcements being considered.
According to L’Equipe PSG are planning to shake up the transfer market this summer ahead of next season. Les Parisiens are not prioritising the goalkeeper position, unless Gianluigi Donnarumma leaves unexpectedly. The Italian goalkeeper has yet to agree to a contract extension, and Manchester United are closely monitoring the situation. Chelsea, on the other hand, have reportedly given up on signing him.
In defence, the الدوري الفرنسي 1 side are targeting two new centre-backs. The name of Illya Zabarnyi is being mentioned frequently. The Bournemouth defender is believed to be joining PSG this summer in a move worth €60 million (£52m/$70m). If Lucas Beraldo were to leave for a minimum offer of €30m (£26m/$35m), a left-footed replacement would be sought immediately. This is especially true given that Milan Skriniar is nearing a departure and Presnel Kimpembe and Lucas Hernandez find themselves very low in the pecking order.
They also want to strengthen the full-back positions due to a lack of reliable backups for Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes. Two new signings, one on the right and one on the left, are therefore being considered. In midfield, stability is the order of the day: Joao Neves, Fabian Ruiz and Vitinha will keep their places. But the club would like to add a more mature player, in the ilk of Joshua Kimmich, who is no longer an option since he extended his contract with Bayern. PSG are scouring the market to find someone who fits the bill.
Sporting director Luis Campos continues to explore offensive options. Two names remain at the top of his list: Victor Osimhen, now very close to a permanent return to Galatasaray, and AC Milan superstar Rafael Leao. Contacts have not been broken off, despite Galatasaray’s more insistent approach for the Nigerian centre forward. Nothing has been finalised yet, but PSG intend to remain in the running until the end.
With over six weeks left before the deadline day of the summer transfer window, Nasser Al-Khelaifi is expected to support Luis Enrique‘s spending spree. PSG will begin their pre-season in two weeks’ time, with their first game of the upcoming season a crucial one. Indeed, they will play Tottenham in the final of the UEFA Super Cup on August 13.
