- Union announce $100M training facility expansion
- Described as "state of the art"
- Infrastructure will provide an economic boost to neighboring area
The Philadelphia Union unveiled a $100 million expansion to their Chester, PA, campus on July 17, with a facility that includes Subaru Park, eight practice fields, an official match field for their MLS NEXT Pro squad, team offices, and a high school for their academy players.
“This is more than just a sports complex,” said Jay Sugarman, Philadelphia Union Principal Owner. “It’s a symbol of growth, opportunity, and unity. WSFS Bank Sportsplex and Subaru Park create one of the most unique sports campuses in the world that will serve as a home for our elite athletes, local families, and fans of the game for years to come.”
Club leadership cast the project as both a high-performance hub and a community anchor — a point Union president Tim McDermott drove home.
“The opening of WSFS Bank Sportsplex marks a major milestone – not just for our organization, but for our entire community,” said McDermott. “This state-of-the-art facility is a commitment to creating opportunities, building connections, and fostering a love of the game for all. Together with WSFS Bank, we’re proud to invest in a space where families, athletes, and neighbors can come together and grow – on and off the field.”
MLS commissioner Don Garber was present at the unveiling, helping share the moment with all in attendance. He was joined by Philadelphia Union ownership and executives, WSFS Bank leadership, and city, county, and state officials.
“Today’s ribbon-cutting is more than the opening of a facility. It’s a celebration of vision, investment, and belief in the power of sport to drive progress,” said Garber. “With this world-class campus – featuring Subaru Park, eight outdoor fields, a match-ready home for Union II, and the integration of YSC Academy – you’ve created something that’s never been done before in الدوري الأمريكي لكرة القدم. The Union’s expanded training facility follows other major investments by Major League Soccer and clubs participating within the league, like expansion side San Diego FC‘s Right To Dream campus that opened up earlier this year. The facility in California features first-team facilities, a residential academy, and an on-site school for participating members.
In June, the Portland Timbers announced that they would be expanding their complex, and later this year, the New York Red Bulls will open a world-class $112 million training complex in New Jersey.
Since the league’s inception, MLS has spent more than $1.5 billion on infrastructure for training facilities.
The Union are expecting more than 500,000 visitors per year to visit their new complex, which will also provide an economic boost to the Chester area.
The senior team takes the pitch Saturday evening on the road in Texas against the Houston Dynamo.
