The FIFA Club World Cup champions chalked up their first Premier League win of the season in style on Friday night.

obliterated London rivals 5-1 on a chaotic evening in the capital’s east end. The Blues’ first win of the season came in some style as Enzo Maresca’s men put on a clinic to go top of the table.

The visitors were rocked just before kick-off as Cole Palmer had to pull out of the starting XI after sustaining an injury in the warmup, allowing to come in for his first start for the club. However, the Brazilian was shown up by his compatriot after giving the ball away leading to West Ham’s opener minutes into the game. A cheeky flick was cut out in his own half by Nayef Aguerd, with Lucas Paqueta afforded the freedom to run forward with the loose ball. He unleashed a fierce strike from 25 yards right across goalkeeper Robert Sanchez into the top corner and kissed the Hammers badge following two tumultuous years ‘in hell’ battling spot-fixing allegations.

However, Chelsea weren’t behind for long and levelled after a quarter of an hour. Pedro Neto’s corner to the near post was flicked up by Marc Cucurella, and Joao Pedro rose highest to nod home at close range. Within 90 seconds of equalising, the Blues thought they had fallen behind again as they failed to deal with Jean-Clair Todibo’s cutback into the box, and Niclas Fullkrug slammed home at the back stick – only for VAR to intervene and deem the French centre-back offside when receiving the ball in the first place.

A manic first half swung the way of Chelsea when Trevoh Chalobah won the ball off Paqueta in the attacking third, and Pedro’s cross was tapped in by namesake Neto at the far post, much to the joy of the travelling supporters. Before the break, the Blues added another too, with Liam Delap holding the ball up for Estevao to run with it and cut it back for Enzo Fernandez to convert.

Graham Potter was not happy and made two substitutions at half-time – Freddie Potts and Callum Wilson on for Todibo and Fullkrug – in an attempt to stem the tide, but that didn’t stop Moises Caicedo adding a fourth after the restart. New goalkeeper Mads Hermansen completely flapped at a Fernandez corner, and the Ecuadorian midfielder was able to flick the ball in with the outside of his boot off the underside of the bar. A fifth followed from Chelsea’s following corner almost immediately from kick-off, with Trevoh Chalobah the next man up to take his place on the scoresheet.

If Chelsea really wanted to, they probably could have put another two or three past Hermansen before full-time, but showed some mercy and kept it at just the five as the tempo slowed down in the closing stages. BALLGM rates Chelsea’s players from London Stadium…

Robert Sanchez (5/10):

If we’re being hyper-critical, Sanchez should have done a bit better with Paqueta’s opening goal. The Spanish stopper took a step in the opposite direction at the wrong time and the ball really ought to have been within his reach.

Malo Gusto (6/10):

Rather than being tasked with coming infield, Gusto spent a good chunk of the game holding the width out on the right flank, allowing Chelsea’s core to control possession. Given a breather for James with Chelsea already 5-1 up.

Trevoh Chalobah (7/10):

Chelsea’s most dominant defender on the night with his front-foot approach, while he was one of their many, many scorers at the other end, taking advantage of some poor West Ham preparation from a corner. Like Gusto was afforded a breather.

Tosin Adarabioyo (6/10):

A run-of-the-mill outing for Chelsea’s leader at the back, having little to do after West Ham went ahead early on.

Marc Cucurella (6/10):

Like Gusto was afforded the licence to get up the wing. Never stopped running in another relentless display before coming off for Hato.

Moises Caicedo (8/10):

Thundered into challenges up against a rather immobile West Ham midfield. Found himself on the scoresheet when Hermansen gifted him the ball from an unassuming corner.

Enzo Fernandez (9/10):

Ran the show when Chelsea were building from deep, spraying the ball wherever he pleaded and found plenty of space between the lines in which to operate. Got in on the act with a goal of his own from metres out.

Estevao Willian (8/10):

Thrust into the starting XI in place of the injured Palmer. Seemed overawed at first having lost possession leading to Paqueta’s goal, but soon got to grips with the English game. Having sprinting into the West Ham box and pulling the ball back for Fernandez to score, Estevao became the youngest player to get Premier League assist for Chelsea. Given a warm ovation after being taken off for Gittens.

Joao Pedro (9/10):

Proved it is possible for himself and Delap to coexist in the same lineup. Moved into an attacking midfield role after Palmer pulled out and sought to take ownership of everything that happened in the final third, coming up with a clever goal and a wicked assist.

Pedro Neto (9/10):

Completely owned the left wing at both ends of the pitch, getting back to help Cucurella and making Aaron Wan-Bissaka’s life hell. Whipped in the corner for Pedro’s equaliser before putting Chelsea ahead himself soon after.

Liam Delap (7/10):

A selfless first start in the Premier League for Chelsea’s new No.9. Held the ball up with his supreme physicality, brought others into play and ran the hard yards out of possession. Subbed on the hour for .

Andrey Santos (6/10):

A West Ham target earlier this window, the midfielder made his first London Stadium appearance off the bench in place of Delap.

Reece James (6/10):

On for Gusto, though had not too much to do given the way the game was going.

Jorrel Hato (6/10):

Ditto. Replaced Cucurella and had little work to get through.

Fofana (6/10):

Caused a stir this week by deleting association with the club from his social media profile, but remains Chelsea through and through according to his manager. Came on for Chalobah.

Jamie Gittens (N/A):

Chalked up some minutes late on after replacing Estevao.

Enzo Maresca (9/10):

Paqueta’s screamer aside, this was a phenomenal performance from Chelsea from back to front, one filled with as many tactical details as there were outstanding goals.
