Tyler Young has signed for Ipswich Town’s U21s following a successful trial. The 19-year-old midfielder, who previously spent time with the Arsenal, MK Dons and QPR academies, has joined just two months after his father, Ashley, sealed a free transfer to the Championship side. The move opens the door for the pair to potentially become the first father-son duo to play together in the Championship.
Ashley has already featured regularly for Ipswich at the start of the new season, showing no signs of slowing down at the age of 40. With Tyler progressing through the ranks, the chance of a historic moment is becoming increasingly realistic.
Ashley and Tyler almost played against each other last season when Everton were drawn against Peterborough in the third round of the FA Cup. Everton brought Ashley on as a second-half substitute, but Tyler was kept on the bench, which led to criticism of Peterborough boss Darren Ferguson.
“If the game had been 2-0 at that point I would have put him on, but it’s 1-0, I’ve got to get a forward on,” Ferguson said after the game. “We’re not a charity case, as much as I wanted Tyler to get on with his dad.”
For now, Tyler will continue developing with Ipswich’s U21s while Ashley remains a key squad player in the Championship. If Tyler earns senior minutes, it could set up a once-in-a-lifetime story for both father and son. All eyes will be on Ipswich’s team sheets as the season unfolds.
