Football General Manager
- Liverpool players lay single rose in tribute
- Cardoso walked among tributes to her husband
- Reds’ pre-season friendly with Preston to be televised
Cardoso hugged her two children as she looked at the sea of flowers, scarves and other tributes left to her late husband. The football world is still coming to terms with the passing of Jota and his brother Andre Silva, both of whom died in a road accident on July 3.
Cardoso was joined by the Liverpool squad, who laid their own tributes in the form of a single rose each. Coach Arne Slot, captain Virgil van Dijk, and stars including Mohamed Salah and Andy Robertson were among those in attendance.
On Friday, Liverpool confirmed Jota’s number would be retired by the club, with no player at any level permitted to wear ’20’. It is the first time the Reds have made that gesture in the club’s history.
Liverpool’s opening pre-season fixture, a friendly against Preston North-End, will be televised live on ITV 1 on Sunday. Ahead of the 3pm BST kick-off, a special rendition of club anthem ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’ will be played, with representatives of both sides laying a wreath in tribute to Jota. Both sets of players will wear a black armband, and a minute’s silence will be observed in Jota and Andre Silva’s memory.
