- Amorim: Sesko has "great potential"
- United completed £74m deal
- Slovenian the latest striker signing
The Red Devils’ boss was speaking after the club announced the completion of a deal worth £74m ($99.5m) for the former RB Leipzig striker. Amorim said Sesko has the “right character” to be a success in Manchester. The Portuguese suggested the 21-year-old possesses a voracious work ethic, as well as the physical traits and skills required of a striker in the Premier League.
The announcement brings United’s search for a new number 9 to a close. The Red Devils have been linked with Viktor Gyokeres, Victor Oshimhen and Ollie Watkins, to name a few, over the past few months, but Sesko emerged as the most likely candidate to join Bryan Mbeumo and Matheus Cunha in a new look attack, after he turned down Newcastle’s advances in favour of United. He will likely leapfrog Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund in the pecking order, as both players have struggled to score consistently since joining the club.
Amorim said: “He has the characteristics that we needed. He’s a player that, with all the information we have, we need to stop the guy from working. It’s not the opposite, that is also important.
“He’s really young. He’s good in the air. He’s good running the channels. He’s good on the ball. So I think he has great potential. I think he can improve a lot, and for sure he’s going to feel at home in our club. He’s the right character to be in this group. So we are really, really happy to have him.”
Sesko was unveiled alongside Mbeumo and Cunha ahead of United’s pre-season friendly against Fiorentina, but he will not take part in the game. The ex-RB Leipzig man will have little time to acclimatise to life in Manchester, as he will almost certainly feature in some capacity during the Red Devils season opener against Arsenal on August 17.
