Less than an hour before Leverkusen found out their draw for the 2025-26 Champions League, the German side took to social media to taunt using Grimsby Town’s name. United crashed out of the Carabao Cup in the second round on Wednesday after losing 12-11 in a penalty shootout against the side. Taking to X, the German club wrote: “Just hoping we don’t get Grimsby…”

United were stunned by the English minnows on Wednesday night and trailed by two goals within the first half hour. However, they staged a comeback through Bryan Mbeumo and Harry Maguire’s late goals to drag the game to the tie-breaker. After a prolonged shootout, Grimsby emerged victorious and qualified for the next round.
