- Mbappe scored from the spot in Madrid’s 1-0 win
- Osasuna manager bemoans referee’s decision
- Accused the French forward of kicking Juan Cruz
Osasuna head coach Lisci was not particularly happy with the referee’s decision to award Real Madrid a penalty in the second half, as Mbappe’s effort from the spot kick was enough to give the hosts the full three points in their opening game of the new La Liga season on Tuesday. Lisci explained that “Mbappe kicked” Osasuna defender Juan Cruz instead of the Frenchman being on the receiving end of a foul.
Mbappe led the attack wonderfully against Osasuna. After a goalless first 45 minutes, the 26-year-old dazzled at the Santiago Bernabeu in the second half and drew the challenge from Cruz in the 50th minute, as a little piece of skill saw him being clipped by the defender in the 18-yard box. Mbappe broke no sweat in breaking the deadlock, with the goal proving enough to help Xabi Alonso kickstart his managerial career in La Liga with maximum points.
Speaking to reporters after the game, Lisci said: “It seemed crystal clear to me that there was nothing wrong with it. Watching it again, Mbappe stepped on Juan Cruz and then kicked him; his leg was blown out from that play. There was no penalty.”
Alonso’s men will be hoping to build on the positive start in the league when they visit newly-promoted Real Oviedo on Sunday.
