Sheffield Wednesday heavily rotated their squad for the cup competition as they fielded eight academy players in their starting lineup. They heavily outnumbered the home fans as the Owls supporters continued with their boycott plans in protest against owner Dejphon Chansiri.
Sheffield Wednesday have got off to a nightmare start to their 2025-26 Championship campaign, collecting just one point from their opening five games. Their only win of the new season came against Leeds United in the Carabao Cup second round as they beat the Premier League outfit on penalties.
Elsewhere, Crystal Palace survived a scare to beat Millwall 4-2 on penalties, while Brentford also won a shootout to knock Aston Villa out of the tournament. In Villa’s clash, Manchester United flop Jadon Sancho finally got to make his debut for the club as he featured in the starting lineup, alongside Harvey Elliott.
Grimsby will return to action this Saturday as they take on Barnet in a League Two clash away from home. They will learn their opponents in the fourth round of the Carabao Cup when the draw is made on Wednesday night.
