- Ter Stegen urged to leave Barcelona
- Goalkeeper told to accept he won’t be first-choice anymore
- Matthaus wants Ter Stegen to stay sharp ahead of World Cup
Legendary former German midfielder Matthaus has discussed the ongoing battle between Ter Stegen and Barcelona and has urged the 33-year-old to leave the club, warning him that he could lose his place as Germany‘s first-choice keeper at next year’s World Cup if he stays in Catalunya and remains on the bench.
Ter Stegen was first-choice at Barcelona until last season, before an ACL injury saw him miss the majority of the campaign. Wojciech Szczesny was signed as a replacement and eventually became head coach Hansi Flick’s undisputed starter in 2025. Last month, the Catalans announced the arrival of Joan Garcia from Espanyol, and it is widely believed that the 24-year-old will be a starter under Flick, with Szczesny serving as his backup and Ter Stegen, should he stay, the third-choice. The German international, however, wants to stay and fight for his place in the team, while Barca are determined to get rid of their captain.
“In my opinion, Ter Stegen will no longer play for Barcelona. He needs to play in order to fulfil his World Cup dream. If he wants to be at the World Cup, he has to move,” the German record international told Bild.
“I understand Ter Stegen; he has performed well, been captain and has his private life in Barcelona. But he has to accept that Barcelona has other ideas, other plans.”
Barcelona are reportedly willing to terminate Ter Stegen’s contract with a severance payment equal to one year’s salary. He would then be able to transfer without a transfer fee. Galatasaray are said to be very interested. Moreover, Ter Stegen reportedly rejected an enquiry from Monaco. Clubs from the Premier League and Serie A are believed to be interested in him, too.
