- President handed over Club World Cup trophy
- Decided not to leave the stage
- Became caught up in wild celebrations
The Blues captured a global crown in the United States when stunning Champions League winners Paris Saint-Germain 3-0 in an epic final showdown that took place at MetLife Stadium in New Jersey.
Trump was in attendance, having been invited by FIFA president Gianni Infantino, and was granted the honour of handing out medals and a prestigious trophy at the final whistle. He had a broad smile on his face when passing major silverware over to Reece James.
Chelsea‘s captain expected Trump to step aside at that point, but he remained unmoved and ended up forming part of wild celebrations. Cole Palmer is among those to have admitted that he was baffled by the President’s antics.
Cucurella shares that opinion, with the Spain international defender telling Jijantes FC: “We had been told that, as a rule, Donald Trump would come to present us with the trophy and that we couldn’t lift it until he left.n
“And of course, we were all there waiting for him to leave, but the guy didn’t want to leave, and on top of that, we looked at him and he said, ‘Lift it up, I’ll stay here’, and so on. And I wondered who would say anything to him, you know… I was scared shitless.”
Having claimed Conference League and Club World Cup honours in 2024-25, while securing a top-four finish in the Premier League, Chelsea have a couple of friendly dates to take in before opening a new domestic campaign at home to Crystal Palace on August 17.
