Wrexham‘s cherished striker and three-time Player of the Year has built a legacy few can match, as 110 goals and three straight promotions mark his tenure with the Welsh club. He was among the first marquee signings made in 2021 after Reynolds and McElhenney took charge, and the striker came up with a tongue-in-cheek answer when he was asked who would triumph in a showdown between Reynolds and McElhenney.

Mullin didn’t hesitate and said, “In real life, Rob. In the film world, probably Ryan.”

On one hand, McElhenney’s physical presence and real-world toughness earned a solid vote of confidence. On the other hand, Reynolds’ action-hero persona—thanks to the Deadpool franchise—makes him formidable in cinematic terms. And Mullin’s answer captured hearts by recognising both men’s unique strengths.

Since the turn of the year, Mullin fell down the pecking order at Wrexham and even found himself omitted from matchday squads on occasion. However, his fortunes have begun to shift at Wigan Athletic. Last week, he earned praise from the Latics’ manager after delivering a strong performance in his debut against Curzon Ashton, where he came off the bench to play 45 solid minutes.

Although on loan with Wigan, Mullin still has two years left on his Wrexham contract. A return to form at the Latics could force the Reds to reshuffle plans and bring him back into the fold next summer as a veteran leader.
