United are reeling following their comfortable 3-0 defeat against fierce rivals Manchester City in last Sunday’s derby at the Etihad Stadium. Amorim’s side also lost to Arsenal and drew with Fulham in their first two fixtures, though they did beat Burnley 3-2 at Old Trafford on August 30.
Manager Amorim has received criticism for resolutely sticking to his favoured 3-4-3 formation despite United’s early-season struggles. And such defiance has led to Irish bookmaker Paddy Power deciding to troll the Portuguese by sending a bus past Old Trafford emblazoned with the words: “The only 343 that works in Manchester”.
Amorim held talks with United’s co-owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe on Thursday amid the club’s struggles on the pitch. However the former Sporting CP boss played down the significance of the meeting, joking that he was offered a new contract during discussions.
Amorim will hoping to preside over a much-improved performance when United entertain Chelsea in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon. His side are likely to face a stern test, however, with Enzo Maresca’s Blues having put together an unbeaten start which has led to them recording two wins and two draws in their opening four league games.
