The Netherlands attacker received backlash after reports speculated on the price of his home in Brazil. It has also been reported that the Dutch forward created an ‘awkward atmosphere’ at the club after being frustrated with his early return following the international break. However, Depay dismissed the coverage as part of a campaign to tarnish his image.
The latest controversy comes amid a standoff between Depay and Corinthians that has been ongoing since August. The Brazilian club, who signed him on a two-year deal in September 2024 after his exit from Atletico Madrid, reportedly owe the Dutchman €1.7 million in bonuses, along with a €1m signing bonus instalment which was due on September 15. There were also reports of Depay contemplating an early contract termination, with Turkish side Besiktas linked, although no move materialised before the deadline.
On Wednesday, the 31-year-old took to X to blast the Brazilian media and others for spreading ‘lies’ to tarnish his image with Corinthians fans.
“A lot of lies has been spread and the campaigns against my name continues… All for what? Trying to turn people against me? Trying to create a bad image?” Depay wrote on X.
“I’ve made it this far in life because I stand for what’s right. I’m protected by a higher power. I’ve seen this movie over and over, ever since I decided not to be a slave athlete and stand 10 toes on business they try to f*ck with me, but God got he’s hand stretched over my head. Yall keep playing with me but karma is real and it’s coming for everyone.”
Despite the off-field drama, Depay continues to perform. He recently scored twice against Lithuania to lead Netherlands to a 3-2 win and overtake Robin van Persie as the country’s all-time top scorer. For Corinthians, he has contributed four goals and three assists in 12 league starts this season, with the team sitting ninth in the standings with seven wins, eight draws and eight losses.
