Austria head coach Rangnick grabbed eyeballs during the 2-1 qualifying victory against . The 67-year-old German e-biked across the pitch in Zenica several times – for example, before the match to give an interview to ORF and at half-time to go to the dressing room.

Rangnick is still dealing with the aftermath of a serious ankle issue that required multiple surgeries over the summer. The former Manchester head coach initially underwent a successful operation, but complications arose when an infection developed post-surgery. He was subsequently readmitted to hospital, where he underwent a second procedure to address the issue. He is still feeling the effects of the medical ordeal and has been consciously limiting his movement, taking as few steps as possible to aid his recovery.

“It could be better. But I’m taking small steps and things are looking up,” said Rangnick. “Unfortunately, my ankle is still not in such good shape.”

Rangnick had previously used a gold cart to get around, but the lack of space in the stadium forced them to seek an alternative method. He added: “I’ve known for a few days that the distances here are long. It can’t be much further.”

Rangnick has been coaching the Austrian team since 2022, leading them to the round of 16 at Euro 2024. Their last World Cup appearance was 27 years ago. After the tournament in 2026, Rangnick is expected to step down from his role in Austria.
