Three years on from completing a £64 million ($86m) switch to Anfield, Nunez could soon be heading for the exit. He has taken in 143 appearances for Premier League champions Liverpool, scoring 40 goals.
The Saudi Pro League could be his next port of call, with Al-Hilal reported to have a big-money offer on the table. Liverpool are prepared to sell after bringing in Hugo Ekitike and targeting Newcastle frontman Alexander Isak.
Offloading Nunez would help to generate funds that can be reinvested in a swoop for Swedish sensation Isak that could end up costing a British record fee – with the Reds having already made history in that department once this summer when signing Florian Wirtz for £116m ($156m).
Slot told reporters when asked about potential movement in and out of Liverpool’s striking department: “These are a lot of questions! As you know from me – and I think every manager works like this – you never talk about players that are not yours. I can talk to you about Hugo, who we signed recently and has done really well until now.
“I and we are very happy with the squad we are having and there is every reason to be happy about that because we won the league last season. OK, players left, but we have brought players in as well and youngsters are doing good.
“At this moment in time, Darwin might indeed leave, but things are not signed yet, so you need to wait maybe a few days before that is completely done. But there is indeed a chance he is going to leave.”
With a move elsewhere on the cards, as he prepares to take on a new challenge alongside Cristiano Ronaldo and Co in the Middle East, Nunez is unlikely to figure for Liverpool in their Community Shield clash with FA Cup winners Crystal Palace at Wembley on Sunday.
