- Eze poised to complete Arsenal switch
- Merson has high hopes for forward
- Signing described as ‘game changer’
Arsenal fans have rejoiced following the news of Eze’s imminent move to the Emirates, when he had seemed destined to join bitter rivals Spurs. And former Arsenal winger Merson believes the England international will help Arteta land the Premier League title following a trio of second-place finishes.
Arsenal’s hijacking of Tottenham‘s protracted bid to buy Eze has caused a massive stir, creating one of the biggest transfer dramas of this or any summer. He’s earned himself instant Clock End cult hero-status in the manner of which he chose the red half of north London over the white. Barring any late issues, his first match for his new club could be against Liverpool.
Merson told Sky Sports: “Eze is a brilliant signing for Arsenal. It’s a game-changer and a perfect fit. If Arsenal had let Spurs get him, I’d have had to question what the club was doing because he’s a quality player. Arsenal struggle when teams come to the Emirates and put everyone behind the ball. Teams want to limit space Arsenal have to play in and they have struggled to break teams down with those tactics.”
Arsenal fans have already erected a mural to their new star signing and the pressure is firmly on Eze to deliver the goods. The Gunners finished ten points behind Premier League champions Liverpool last season and their supporters will hope Eze can help bridge and surmount that gap.
