The 22-year-old Englishman has been with the Reds since he was seven but is starting the next chapter of his career by making the switch to . Morton made 14 senior appearances for , also spending time on loan at both and before deciding to depart Anfield.

Morton’s departure to Lyon opens the door for 18-year-old Trey Nyoni to become a fully fledged member of Arne Slot’s first team for the 2025-26 campaign. After helping Under-21s lift back-to-back European Championships this summer, the former’s exit raises £15m in sales for the champions.

Liverpool are still keen to push through a deal for Alexander Isak this summer, despite already having a bid worth over £100m turned down. Morton’s sale helps free up more funds for a final push to bring the Swedish striker to Anfield.

Morton will head to France full of optimism as he looks to make a name for himself alongside the other Brits abroad. Lyon finished sixth last term in and have successfully been reinstated into the division despite sanctions from the league following financial issues. They get their campaign underway on 16 August against Lens.
