Football General Manager
- Wirtz up and running for Liverpool
- Inspired Reds to comeback victory
- Handsomely rewarded for bright performance
Japanese forward Asahi Uenaka struck shortly after the interval, giving Yokohama a surprise lead that momentarily stunned the travelling Reds fans. However, it didn’t take long for Wirtz to make his mark as the 22-year-old scored the equaliser with a well-taken effort, opening his Liverpool account in style. His goal paved the way for an impressive comeback, with academy stars Trey Nyoni and Rio Ngumoha each adding a goal to secure the 3-1 win.
Wirtz’s composure, creativity, and goal-scoring instincts were on full display, signalling a promising beginning to his career under Arne Slot. In addition to the Man of the Match trophy, Wirtz also received a financial bonus for his performance. He was presented with a ¥1,000,000 cash prize, equivalent to approximately £5,043 or $6,700.
Wirtz made headlines last month when Liverpool confirmed his acquisition from Leverkusen in a deal that could become the highest transfer fee ever paid by a British club. The agreement is understood to be worth up to £116 million ($154.6m), inclusive of performance-based bonuses and clauses. The young German enjoyed a sensational 2023-24 season, helping Leverkusen claim their first-ever Bundesliga title. He also lifted the German Cup and the German Super Cup and was named the Bundesliga Player of the Season for his consistently dazzling performances.
Having wrapped up their pre-season tour in Asia on a high note, Liverpool will now return to England to continue their preparations for the new campaign. Next on the calendar are two friendly clashes with Athletic Club scheduled for August 4. Wirtz’s first official chance to add a trophy to his Liverpool resume will come on August 10, when the Reds take on Crystal Palace at Wembley Stadium in the Community Shield.
