Just a year back, Newcastle were faced with a difficult financial decision as they scrambled to remain within the ‘s Profit and Sustainability regulations. In a desperate effort to balance their books, the Magpies seriously considered parting ways with Gordon, one of their most valuable assets. Liverpool were among the clubs interested in signing the winger at the time.

Now, in a strange twist of fate, it is Isak who finds himself at the centre of similar talks. While Gordon ultimately stayed at the club and thrived, Isak is reportedly eager to leave and Liverpool have emerged as the frontrunners for his signature. The Reds have already submitted an official bid of £120 million ($159m) for the Swedish forward, but Newcastle quickly turned it down. The club has taken a firm stance, reiterating Isak will only be sold if the Merseyside club come back with an offer of at least £150m ($198m).

In an interview with the Daily Mail Gordon said: “I understand what Alex is going through. What I can say, for me, is that it’s been an absolute pleasure to be out of the transfer speculation for a summer! It’s the first time in about three years! It’s been so easy, so mentally refreshing.”

On switching his own position to play more centrally, he added: “I’ve said before, I like playing No. 9. I’d have to practise and get the reps in to get the patterns that we do. If that’s a challenge the manager wants to throw at me, I’m happy.”

It remains to be seen if Liverpool will return with an improved bid or opt to withdraw from the race altogether. Newcastle’s valuation of £150 million presents a considerable fee and, since Isak is still under a long-term contract with the Magpies, the Tyneside outfit hold all the cards during the negotiations.
