- Saul pulls out of Trabzonspor move over personal reasons
- Former Atleti teammate Filipe Luis brings him to Flamengo
- Flamengo sign Saul on three-year deal until 2027
Saul had reached a verbal agreement with Trabzonspor, as per Fabrizio Romano, but pulled out of the move at the last minute. The Spanish midfielder posted on social media that “personal stuff” prevented the deal from going through. Earlier this summer, the 30-year-old terminated his 17-year association with Atletico Madrid, making him a free agent.
Saul has now agreed to join Flamengo on a contract until 2027 as per Romano. His sudden U-turn has raised eyebrows, especially as he quickly found a new club as the Brazilian giants swooped in to complete the deal.
Saul and Flamengo boss Luis played over 140 games together at Atletico Madrid, building a strong rapport on the pitch. Flamengo also recently signed another ex-Chelsea player, Jorginho, from Arsenal. Saul’s arrival adds further European experience to a squad looking to challenge for domestic and continental honours.
The Spanish veteran will soon be unveiled by Flamengo and is expected to join up with the squad later this month. The Brazilian club is targeting more silverware under Luis, and Saul could be a key piece in their midfield rebuild. Trabzonspor, meanwhile, must return to the market for an alternative signing.
