- Yamal’s birthday party sparked disability rights outrage
- Rivaldo defended teenager but warned the forward
- Spain hero thriving in leading role at Barcelona
Yamal is facing intense scrutiny following controversy over his birthday celebration, according to a report from Sport. Disability rights groups criticised Yamal after it emerged he had hired people with dwarfism for his private party. The backlash prompted official investigations from Spain’s Ministry for Social Rights, with advocacy organisations formally condemning the event as “degrading” and in violation of current legislation. Yamal has not made a public statement on the issue, while Barcelona have treated the controversy as a private matter for now.
The incident has placed a spotlight on the responsibilities of young footballers amid rising fame. Yamal, who recently inherited Barcelona’s iconic number 10 shirt, is not only a key figure for his club but also a role model for young fans. Former Barcelona legend Rivaldo defended the teenager, calling him “intelligent” and “aware” but warning that even minor mistakes can have “a greater impact due to age and media exposure.” Rivaldo urged Yamal to reflect on his achievements and avoid future controversies that could hinder his career, emphasising the wish for media attention to focus on his on-field brilliance.
Rivaldo praised Yamal but advised him to be aware, telling Betfair: “Lamine is a kid with a sound mind, he’s intelligent, and he’s aware of the times he’s living in. But, unfortunately, these things happen, especially when you’re so young and already so famous. Any behaviour ends up having a greater impact due to age and media exposure. We hope you reflect on everything you have built up to now, to avoid this type of situation.”
Speaking of his importance on the field, Rivaldo highlighted: “Those of us who love football want him to continue shining, to play well, and to avoid any controversies that could harm his career. What we want is to talk about what he does on the field, which is wonderful. So, I hope no more rumours come out, because that’s annoying, it’s sad. We just want to see him shine with the ball at his feet. He deserves to be spoken of only positively, for the football he offers.”
Yamal will continue pre-season preparations with Barcelona. The young forward is expected to play a major role when the new La Liga campaign commences next month and will be under increased scrutiny – on and off the field – as legal and public attention surrounding the birthday incident continues.
