Lucho Acosta, the 2023 MLS MVP, has been transferred from FC Dallas to Brazilian giants Fluminense for a fee of nearly of $4M, plus add-ons. Acosta signed for FCD in February, joining from نادي سينسيناتي لكرة القدم, and departed the club after just seven months.
“Signing Lucho Acosta was a calculated move for our club, and we were excited about what he could bring to FC Dallas,” team president Dan Hunt said. “His legacy in MLS is undeniable, and while this chapter was shorter than we imagined, we respect Lucho’s desire to be closer to home and thank him for his contributions this season.
“As we look ahead, this move gives us the opportunity to reshape our roster and continue building a team that plays with purpose, pride, and intensity.”
Acosta is viewed as a replacement for midfielder Jhon Arias, who was a breakout performer at the 2025 كأس العالم للأندية FIFA, and then signed by الدوري الإنجليزي الممتاز جانب وولفرهامبتون واندررز.
Acsota, who was a bona fide star in MLS with FCC, saw his production dip for FCD, with just five goals and one assist in 21 matches. In his 2023 MVP season he recorded 17 goals and 14 assists as he led Cincy to the Supporters’ Shield. He added 14 goals and 19 assists last year.
At the end of the 2024 campaign, he requested a trade from the club after a fallout with technical staff, which resulted in his move to Dallas. Now, he’ll return to South America, where he featured a decade back for both Estudiantes and بوكا جونيورز في الأرجنتين.
Reports surfaced in 2023 that he had aspirations to represent the USMNT. However, to gain citizenship to do so, he would have had to reside in the U.S. for five consecutive years. Near the end of the 2024 campaign, Acosta claimed his citizenship could be sortedby the end of 2025 in time for the 2026 FIFA كأس العالم.
However, with Acosta now departing for Fluminense, it appears that the option to represent the USMNT is no longer on the table. Laurel Pfaler of the Queen City Press shared that he was six months from eligibility this week.
Acosta, 31, scored 82 goals for three MLS clubs across all competitions.
Acosta was part of what is considered one of the most iconic goals in MLS history, featuring English legend Wayne Rooney at D.C. متحد in 2018.
Upon completion of the transfer, Acosta will look to debut for Fluminense later this month. The Brazilian side has six matches left on the calendar August.
