Lopez has decided to remain at the club, bringing an end to transfer speculation linking him with a deadline-day move to Chelsea, according to reports from Mundo Deportivo. The Premier League club had reportedly submitted an offer of €40m (£34m/$46m) plus add-ons for the 22-year-old, but Lopez opted against pushing for a move away from the Camp Nou.
Chelsea’s strong interest reportedly led Lopez to consider his options, particularly given the increased competition for places in Barcelona’s attack. The presence of players like Dani Olmo, Raphinha and summer signing Marcus Rashford mean his starting opportunities may be limited. However, Barcelona’s hierarchy, including manager Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco, were always adamant about keeping the player and had no intention of entering negotiations unless Lopez formally requested a transfer.
Barcelona did not formally respond to Chelsea’s offer, as they considered the bid to be significantly below their valuation. The Catalan club reportedly valued Lopez at €90m (£78m/$105m) and would only have considered a sale if the player had forced the issue, which he ultimately chose not to do.
With his future now settled, Lopez will remain at Barcelona, where he is under contract until 2029. The midfielder is currently on international duty with the Spanish national team and will return to compete for his place in Flick’s plans. For Chelsea, the pursuit is over, and they must now turn their attention to other targets before the transfer window closes. After a 1-1 draw against Rayo Vallecano, Barca will look to get back to winning ways against Valencia after the international break.
