The incident occurred during the Cherries’ 4-2 loss to Liverpool at Anfield on Friday night, with play stopped in the 29th minute after the 25-year-old alerted referee Anthony Taylor to what had happened.

Merseyside Police have confirmed a 47-year-old male who was arrested on suspicion of a racially aggravated public order offence has been conditionally bailed. His bail includes conditions of not attending any football game in the UK and staying one mile away from any designated football stadium.

Police say the investigation is ongoing and they are working with Liverpool over the matter. Semenyo himself praised the reaction of his Bournemouth team-mates and the Liverpool players, saying “the entire football world stood together” in the face of abhorrent abuse.

Semenyo, who scored twice at Anfield, will be back in action for Bournemouth when they host Wolves on Saturday.
