- Amorim says Mainoo has ‘some issues’
- Problem around playing system
- Mainoo remains key player for United
Mainoo was an unused sub for United’s season opener against Arsenal and now boss Amorim has lifted the lid on some of the struggles the 20-year-old has faced in recent weeks. There’s no suggestion the manager is disappointed with his player, but there is plenty of work for the young England international to put in.
There is real affection for Mainoo at United and this has the potential to become a seminal season for him. United have options in central midfield – which include Casemiro – so he’ll be aware that he can nail down a regular stating place.
Amorim told reporters: “We had some issues but we play with two midfielders, so it’s sometimes a different way of playing, and we have to understand, they have to understand, especially the young players, that there is phases in the season. Nowadays it’s normal with a lot of games, things are going to change, but he is there, he’s fighting, he’s training, so he’s one more option for us to win games.”
Mainoo is firmly part of United’s future plans and is tied to the club until June 2027 under his current deal. Amorim has indicated director of football Jason Wilcox will handle negotiations for a new contract, with talks ongoing.
