Martinez’s decision to move to Al-Nassr will see him team up with Portugal forward Ronaldo, 40, with the defender revealing the two have already spoken following his arrival. While Martinez says he had already heard good things about the former Real Madrid and Manchester United star, he could not help but be “surprised” by his new team-mate’s positive energy.
Describing his early rapport with Ronaldo, Martinez – in quotes carried by Portuguese publication O Jogo – said: “There’s a good feeling; he was waiting for me when I arrived in Portugal [for pre-season training], and we were able to talk. He’s cheerful, and I sense a good atmosphere within the group.”
Martinez is one of a number of eye-catching arrivals at Al-Nassr this summer, with Joao Felix having sealed a move from Chelsea in July. Jorge Jesus’ men are also close to completing a £26m ($35m) deal to sign Bayern Munich winger Kingsley Coman.
Martinez could line up alongside Ronaldo when Al-Nassr take on Al-Ittihad in the Saudi Super Cup semi-final on August 19.The Saudi giants have been in good form in pre-season, winning three out of their four warm-up fixtures.
