وفق Fabrizio Romano, Boniface will head back to after failing to pass his medical AC Milan. The Italian club had agreed to sign the international for a €5 million (£4.3m/$5.8m) loan fee and a €24m buy clause, but the deal is now off the table.

Boniface’s failed transfer to San Siro could give fresh hope to out-of-favour striker Rasmus Hojlund, who has also been strongly linked with a move to AC Milan. Hojlund, who is part of Ruben Amorim’s ‘bomb squad’, is being tipped to leave Old Trafford before the summer transfer window slams shut.

Italian champions Napoli are also exploring options to bring Hojlund in on loan to bolster their frontline after Romelu Lukaku suffered a thigh injury at the start of the season. It remains to be seen if Milan launch a formal bid for Hojlund to rival Napoli.

Hojlund was left out of the Red Devils’ matchday squad for the second consecutive week against on Sunday. The Danish forward’s future at the club looks bleak after the summer addition of Slovenian striker Benjamin Sesko.
