Beier has addressed the summer transfer speculation linking him with a €70 million (£60m/$82m) move to Brentford, confirming he has spoken with manager Kovac and has “no intention of leaving” the Bundesliga club.
“I noticed that there were a few rumours going around. I also had to listen to a few comments from my teammates,” Beier said in an interview with Eurosport. “I spoke to Niko about it, and he told me quite clearly that I should stay here. I also made it clear to him during the conversation that I have no intention of leaving and would like to stay in Dortmund.”
Reports during the transfer window suggested that Premier League side Brentford were prepared to table a significant offer for the German international. According to Ruhr Nachrichten Dortmund may have been open to a sale had new signing Fabio Silva been immediately available. However, the Portuguese striker is sidelined until at least the end of September after undergoing adductor surgery prior to his move, a development which reportedly frustrated the club’s hierarchy.
Beier joined Borussia Dortmund from Hoffenheim for €28.5m last summer and has flourished under Kovac, becoming a key player. Across 21 appearances under the current manager, the 22-year-old has been directly involved in 11 goals.
“We get on well, we talk a lot. I had a very good spell under him last season, he made me better,” Beier said of Kovac. “He consistently plays me in my preferred position – either in a two-man attack or as a deep-lying striker in the centre. That suits me very well.”
With his immediate future secured at Dortmund and the transfer window now closed, Beier’s focus will be on continuing his impressive form. He will have the opportunity to add to his goal tally when Borussia Dortmund travel to face Heidenheim in the Bundesliga on Saturday.
