Amorim is already under pressure at Manchester United after overseeing the club’s worst start to a season in 33 years. The players are said to be losing faith in his system, with captain Bruno Fernandes unhappy at being asked to play a deeper role. After managing just one win from his first four Premier League games so far in 2025-26, it’s been reported that Amorim may now have just three league matches to save his job.
The Red Devils are also busy lining up potential successors for Amorim in the event that he is dismissed. According to the Mirror there are already five candidates on Manchester United‘s shortlist. Pochettino and Southgate are once again being linked with a move to Old Trafford, while the club are also thought to be interested in Premier League trio Silva, Iraola and Glasner.
Despite his struggles, Amorim has insisted he will not change his 3-4-3 system at Manchester United. Speaking after the 3-0 humbling by Manchester City, he said: “It’s not a record that you should have in Manchester United. There are a lot of things that you have no idea what happened during these months, but I accept that. But I’m not going to change. When I want to change my philosophy, I will change. If not, you have to change the man.”
However, Manchester United know that sacking Amorim will prove expensive business. The club would have to pay their Portuguese boss an eye-watering £12 million ($17m) if he is dismissed inside the first year of his contract.
Amorim’s next three games now look crucial for his future at the club. The Red Devils return to action on Saturday against Chelsea at Old Trafford in the Premier League and then face Brentford and Sunderland. The Premier League then pauses for another international break, with United facing a daunting trip to bitter rivals Liverpool at Anfield when domestic action resumes.
