- Rodrygo set to leave Madrid
- Man City & Liverpool in race to sign the winger
- Brazilian was left on the bench against Osasuna
According to journalist Jorge Nicola Rodrygo is very close to leaving Madrid this summer and making a move to the Premier League, where Liverpool and Manchester City are battling it out in a two-horse race to secure the Brazilian’s signature.
The journalist added that Pep Guardiola is pursuing a move for the Selecao star, although his arrival at Etihad Stadium is subject to Savinho leaving the club for Tottenham Hotspur this summer. Liverpool, on the other hand, have also joined the transfer race as they have identified Rodrygo as a direct replacement for Luis Diaz, who joined Bayern Munich earlier this summer.
After leaving out Rodrygo on the bench against Osasuna, Alonso had explained his decision in the post-match interaction with the media, where he said: “Rodrygo? Nothing is happening. I count on Rodrygo, of course. It’s just a game. This was my decision.”
Rodrygo has a contract with Los Blancos until 2028 and the club had earlier made it clear that they are in no hurry to sell the winger, unless a club match their €100 million (£86m/$116m) asking price. It remains to be seen if the 24-year-old can actually complete a move to England this summer.
